Sajitha Shankar is an advocate of contemporary art in Kerala. She runs Gowry Art Institute for inter-disciplinary studies in art and a place for artists, writers and poets to converge and create works of art in Trivandrum. She grew up in Kumaranallor in Kottayam district and was graduated in painting from Govt. College of Arts, Trivandrum.

One of the most feted contemporary female artists from Kerala, Sajitha's body of work is an intense search for the self, a celebration of womanhood, a quest for the feminine in nature and in the universe. She participated in exhibitions, solo and group in Germany, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, and Netherlands and so on.


Awards and Grants

  • 1999 - Travel grant from Queen Hall Arts Centre - UK; Travel grant from Nomad Project for England and Japan.
  • 1997 - 50th Golden Jubilee of Independence of India exhibition, Senior Award, Organised by Tamil Nadu State Akademi.
  • 1996 - Grand Prize, 12th Cleveland International Drawing Biennale, U.K.
  • 1995 - "Charles Wallace Award" through British Council, U.K.
  • 1994 - "Kerala Sate Award" for Painting.
  • 1993 - 95 - Scholarship from Shantidevi Mansinghka Trust, Calcutta.
  • 1992 - 93 - Research Grant for Painting, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi
  • 1992 - Lions Club Award.
