Anjali Menon won National Award 2013

anajli menonAnjali Menon , the Indian scrip writer cum film Director has won the National Film Award for the best screen play ( Dialogues) for the Malayalam Film “Ustad Hotel” .The renowned malayalee director, received award from President Shri Pranab Mukherjee at a function of National Film award ceremony , conducted on 3rd May, (Friday) at New Delhi. Mumbai based writer, started her film debut with Manjadikuru (Lucky Red Seeds), starring Prithviraj, for which she got the FIPRESCI award for the Best Malayalam film, at 2008 International Film Festival of Kerala. In 2009, the film swept the awards at South Asian International Film Festival at New York, winning five Grand Jury Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematographer & Best Emerging Talent. Talking to the media , she said ,”it was bit ironical that I got it for dialogues” and there is a reason for surprise .Anjali ,who grew up in Dubai ,learnt to write Malayalm only in 2005. Initially drafts were written in English and then friend of hers did the translation. Thereafter, she began working on the Malayalam version and worked on the dialogues continuously . She also says that , “As I don’t know any big Malayalam words , I used simple language and that touched people’s hearts”. Perhaps that was why I won. At present, Anjali is working on another script , which she will direct. It will be produced by Rasheed.

First Keralite in over 20 years to top civil services

harithFulfilling her childhood dream Haritha V Kumar, a woman from Kerala in her fourth and last attempt has bagged the first place in the civil services examination for the first time from the state since 1991. The state also obtained the second and fourth positions respectively.

Haritha Kumar, who is undergoing training as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) official while talking to reporters from Faridabad near Delhi said that she is very grateful to her teachers and her family who supported her cause.

She said that she could not pass the examination in her first attempt, as she fell short of 18 marks in clearing the mains. Haritha, who could not pass in her first attempt, got 179th rank while she attempted the exam for the second time.Though she was selected for Indian Police Service, she decided to get on with IRS.

Haritha Kumar, an engineer by profession said that while she attempted for the third time she got a rank of 290 and showed her eagerness to become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) official. ‘I chose Economics and Malayalam literature as optional subject,’ said Haritha who has three more weeks to finish her training programme in Faridabad.

Though Haritha could not get the pass mark in her first attempt she did not give up her confidence. Instead of pushing herself to dismay, she cracked the exams and fulfilled her childhood dream by achieving the goal. The end of the day on Friday saw the 27-year-old woman from Kerala become the topper of the UPSC civil services exam for 2012.

She said that she believes economy to be the fundamental problem to all issues which the country is facing and therefore preferred having a deep knowledge in the subject.

Haritha, likes reading books particularly of Khalil Gibran and also takes interest in watching Malayalam movies.

Girls to gain taekwondo classes in the high schools


By  taking into the account the  numerous physical assault against women and children, the District Panchayat has decided to provide taekwondo training  in high schools for empowering  girls  in the city. The  proposed scheme   will be implemented  in government high schools  by different stages. Initially , the project will be  started in 12 different  schools ,identified by the civic body. The civic body is   organising  this programme with the  association  of DDE (Deputy  Director of Education ) and District  Taekwondo Associations. Officially, this  programme will be inaugurated   in the first week of the May.
The project is planned  to impart taekwondo training to around  40 students  of different schools initially , and  later would  be introduced to other  high schools.   The course  is of 72 hour duration and those who successfully complete the course will be granted a merit certificate .The  State Government has  also sanctioned  an amount of  5 lakh for this project  in the last year budget.

Kerala girls beat  Tamil nadu 83-87 in the final  to claim  their fourth consecutive title in  30th national youth basketball championship  organised at Netaji Indoor stadium in  Kolkata  on Tuesday. Led by the India Nelson, the champions reached the lead  score   of  46-33 points within  half time. Shooting 17 points, Mayukha  KT  was again the top scorer with a cent percent conversion rate on free throws. India, Aneeta  PV and Nimmy Mathew contributed 15 points each for the  Kerala team while Vimy Varkey netted 13.V Rachel topscored 17 points for the runners up.

Sanuja creates history in “Ningalkkumaakam Kodeeswaran” programme in Asianet

24 hour Gender Help Desk Centres for women and children


The  Kerala State Kudumbashree  Mission  has planned to open  24 hour gender  help desk centres  for  providing short term gender shelter facility to the women and children .  The main objective of this  is to provide  medical help,  legal support and counselling etc  to those women and children , who are the victims of the  domestic violence. Initially  ,the  Kudumbashree   will be  starting   women shelters  in  Thiruvananthapuram , Ernakulam  and Malapppuram Districts and later  would  be  extended to other places . The  State Government  has  also allocated a sum of Rs  10 Lakh   to make these centres functional.
