Behind the beautiful ….

Ambika PillaiMaking waves in the beauty business Ambika Pillai, much sought after hair stylist and makeup artist has reached many heights, yet she’s unknown in her homeland. Ambika hails from Kollam from an affluent family. Even though she is one of the reining icons of the make-up art today, in Kerala people hardly know this diva. Divorced at a tender age Ambika had to leave Kerala with her two year daughter to Delhi, leaving behind her shattered past. From thereon she started a new journey, a voyage to glory.

Ambika started her career as a hair stylist, and then went on to become a renowned make-up artist. Bollywood embraced her with Aishwarya Rai starrer ‘taal’, but she chose to move into fashion field where everything changes constantly. She wishes to deal with common people who long for a dazzling look rather than Bollywood and fashion divas in modeling industry. Ambika has also started a line of cosmetics. Ambika’s three sisters, Gopika, Renuka and Devika are also drawn into the fashion circuit, trained by her. Ambika’s daughter Kavitha is also following the footsteps of her mother. Ambika is totally a family person; butterflies tattooed on her neck are in memory of her father.
Ambika has been awarded several National and International accolades which include the Bharat Nirman Achievers Award in 2007, Zee Idea Fashion Award for Best Makeup Artist and Best Hair Stylist in 2006, Kingfisher Fashion Award for Best Hair Designer and IAAFA for the Best Make-up Artist in 1996, Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Female Awards for Best Hair and Makeup artist 2009 and Vogue Best Makeup Artist award 2011. From nothing to almost 300 stylings a day, she has worked on everyone from the Royal Al-Sabah family of Kuwait to Anna Kournikova to Aishwarya Rai to the countless number of celebrities. She has done fashion shows in New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius, Switzerland etc.
Ambika is proud to be a Malayali. According to Ambika Malayali women have the best skin, but the most complex hair. She feels that Kerala women have to get the oil factor out of their hair and go for some make up to enhance their beauty. Ambika Pillai is one of the judges of ‘Midukki’ , a  reality show on the hunt for ‘Kerala’s smartest woman’ aired in Mazhavil Manorama channel.
