Indian Budget 2012-13 : A mixed bag for women

The Union Budget proved to be a mixed bag for women. The magnitude of total allocations mentioned in the Gender Budgeting Statement as proportion of the total Union Government Expenditure has gone up to 5.9 percent. This is however only a marginal increase of 0.1 percent from last year’s estimate, with allocations being low on an avergae. While the 2012-13 Budget pays some attention to issues pertaining to housing, urban poverty alleviation, drinking water and sanitation and water resources, it does not offer any  significant increase in spending in the social sector.
